Jack Mountjoy Sloan

Jack Mountjoy Sloan, 93 of Powhatan died June 18, 2021 at the home of his daughter in Saffell. He was born to the late James Franklin and Snow Mountjoy Sloan at Clover Crest in Black Rock on September 20, 1927. He married Suzanne Cornelius May 27, 1953 at Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas. Except for periods of military service, he was a lifetime resident of Lawrence County, Also preceding him in death were his wife of 42 years; older brother, James Franklin Sloan III, daughter Dixie Moore, and grandson Justin Sloan Durham. He is survived by daughter Lesia Joy Phillips, grandchildren Ryan (Beth) Phillips and their children Caletta Ross (fiancé Eric Elliot), Abygail and Josie Phillips, and great, great-grandson, Brooks Eliot; Austin (Tosha) Phillips and their children Gunner and Ace Phillips and Carson and Abby Griffin and Clay (Jordan) Phillips and daughters Maggie and Rylee Phillips. Step-grandsons Randy (Melinda) Moore and his children Kendra Moore, Kristine Albin, Clayton Moore and Sammy (Jill) Moore and their sons Conner, Brady, and Cole Moore; son Daniel Franklin (Cindy) Sloan and grandchildren Jeremiah (Blythe) Sloan and their sons Atlas, Everest, Cypress, and Sparrow Sloan; Sarah Sloan (fiancé Luke Holloway), Stacy Killian and children Chase Snapp and Jadyn Killian; Katie (Josh) McGaha and their children Kaleb Walling, Weston, Addison, and Jace McGaha; Jodie (Blake) Perkins and sons Maddox and Rylan Perkins. Bonus family are Dean (Michelle) Cross, their son Christopher (Patience) Cross and Tammy Davis and her daughter, Malora Davis, daughter Dina Gail (Sloan) Durham, grandchildren Courtney Durham (fiancée Paula Perkins) and children Owen Wheeler, Paityn, and Tinsley Durham; Dr. April Durham, and Kalie Durham and daughter Adalynd Jines, son Kelly Vance Sloan, grandson Skylar and Skylar’s daughter Skyla, step-granddaughters, Brandi Brandon and children Dexter and Ryker, Casey Furgeison and her children Hailee and Owen Broadway, Toni Alexander and children Aubrey and Eli, and Jackie Furgeison and children; son Michael Alan (Kendra) Sloan, grandchildren Nathan (Vicky) Sloan and their children Sarah Sloan, Chris (Kayla) and Jake (Amanda) Larson and great, great granddaughter Elizabeth Larson; Trever Sloan, Cody Robins and his daughter Kourtney Robins, and Pasha Murphy and children Marissa and Eli Murphy, son Patrick Cornelius (Michele) Sloan, grandchildren Christopher (Brittany) Sloan and their children Emery, Gunner, and Wensleigh; Bridget, and Brandon Sloan ; and daughter Jacquelyn Suzanne (Kenny) Whisnant, grandchildren Shantel Blankenship Archer and her sons Kyler and Kason Archer, and Jacob Blankenship. He is also survived by younger brother Winston (Anne) Sloan, three nephews and three nieces, many cousins. Words to describe him include: “intelligent, patient, modest, humble, quiet, reserved, fair-minded, thinks before he speaks.” Graduating from Black Rock High School as salutatorian in 1945 he entered college at University of Arkansas. After a semester, he was drafted into the Army, completed training, and landed in Japan on Christmas Eve. When he returned to college, he joined ROTC. He soloed as a pilot in 1949. After graduation in 1951 as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a BS in Agriculture and being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force, he was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Upon completion of his obligation in 1953, he transferred to the Air Force Reserves and continued serving until he retired as Major Sloan with 20 years of accrued service covering WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Several of those years were served as liaison officer for the Air Force Academy. As a college student, he was a member of Sigma Chi, where he worked as house manager, and was recognized as a “Life Loyal Sig”. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Zeta, Phi Sigma Biological Society, The National Society of Scabbard and Blade and the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. Jack spent a lifetime farming. He chose the name Shamrock Farms as a nod to the house where he was born and his Scotch-Irish heritage. At various times operations included cattle, hogs, silage/hay and row crops. He managed and worked at his own concerns until his late 80s. He also managed his father’s estate from the age of 32 until it was divided among heirs. In the early 1980s, he and some friends converted some of his pasture into a golf course which became his hobby. Even at his death, his grip was still strong. He collected many things including coins, stamps, and tools.. Raised as a Presbyterian, he also attended the Black Rock United Methodist Church for many years and most recently had been a part of the congregation at New Hope Baptist Church. He was elected to the Black Rock School Board in 1960 and continued to serve for over 25 years. As a school board member, he awarded diplomas to seven of his eight children. Jack was part of the group that organized Farm Service, Inc. and served as the first vice president of its board of directors. He has also served on the Black River Technical College Advisory Board and the Black Rock Development Corporation Board of Directors. He was a Life Scout, a charter member of Black Rock Lions Club, served as local committee chairman of the Boy Scouts and as a member of the Northeast Arkansas Boy Scout Council. He was a member of the Arkansas Cattleman's Association Visitation will be Saturday, June 26 at New Hope Baptist Church, 2720 Hwy. 117, Black Rock from 10:00 a.m. to noon followed by the funeral. Burial will be at Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jack’s four sons and his sons-in-law, Sloan Durham and Kenny Whisnant. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Justin Sloan Durham Scholarship, 1156 Hwy 115, Smithville, AR 72466 or the Sloan Memorial Scholarship Fund at Iberia Bank.
